How we learn in virtual worlds: Another award for research work from Passau

How do people learn in virtual worlds? This question is the focus of the research area "Immersive Learning". Dr. Andreas Dengel (University of Würzburg) and Prof. Dr. Jutta Mägdefrau (University of Passau) have dealt scientifically with such learning processes and, in particular, examined the interplay of technological and subjective factors in the learning process and their influence on learning success. For their article on their theoretical framework model for investigating these relationships, Dengel and Mägdefrau have now also won the Best Full Paper Award of the Immersive Learning Research Network Conference (iLRN 2020) after the IEEE TALE Best Full Paper Award 2018.

Immersive learning stands for immersion in an artificial learning environment. Computer science didactic Andreas Dengel, research associate at the University of Passau in the QLB project SKILL, in which innovative teaching and consulting concepts are being developed in teacher training, deals with this topic. One of his works has now been recognized at a conference in Wollongong, Australia.

Virtual Reality - A cooperation with the University of Passau

Diving into virtual worlds and learning something about exciting IT topics at the same time - this was the chance for pupils in the 4th and 5th grades of the BG and BRG Schärding.
Excursions to the computer science faculty of the University of Passau have already taken place regularly in recent years. This year a larger project could be initiated through a collaboration between Prof. Andrea Emmersberger and Andreas Dengel, who is working on learning with virtual reality as part of his doctorate.

Pioneering work in virtual learning worlds

The computer science didactic specialist Andreas Dengel examines how virtual reality influences learning success in the classroom. To this end, he had schoolchildren in Schärding test various virtual environments, some of which were created in seminars at the University of Passau.

Children's ideas about "digital media"

Workshop at the University of Würzburg as part of teacher training

In the course of the school education teacher training at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, emphasis is placed not only on selected theoretical content, but also on testing and implementing it in practice.

Successful learning in computer science through virtual reality

The computer science educator from Passau, Andreas Dengel, had pupils test virtual worlds. The result: the young people learned something new in all virtual environments. Decisive for the learning success was, among other things, the face-to-face experience of the students, the feeling of 'being there'.

Micro: Bit workshop with the University of Würzburg

What actually is a computer, where can computers be found and how do you program them? 18 pupils from the seventh grade of the middle school dealt with these questions during a visit by student teachers at the University of Würzburg. As part of the seminar "Design perspectives of media and IT education in secondary schools" by Andreas Dengel (research associate at the chair for school education, University of Würzburg), the students were able to get to know various ideas of media education and IT education. The planning and implementation of the practical project was one of the main focuses of the seminar.
